Sensex shuts above the 17,000-mark today. The recovery was primarily because of good purchasing in banking, realty and capital goods stocks.
Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange, that started out at 16,855.60 points, closed 135.93 points, or 0.80 percent up at 17,032.56 points from its previous close of 16,896.63 points.
The Sensex reached a high of 17,050.44 points and a low of 16,799.63 in the intra-day business.
The BSE midcap index was up 48.11 points though the smallcap index was up 48.59 points.
 Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was up 0.87 percent at 5,165 points.
The stocks increased in spite of the rupee reaching a record low of 56.57 against dollar and adverse global cues. Overseas markets dropped following the US Federal Reserve overnight made the decision in favour of a minimal expansion of financial stimulus and a study demonstrated China’s factory sector slowed down for an eighth month running.
