Ankara, Nov 11: A passenger ferry bound for Turkey's Golcuk town from Kocaeli (Izmit) has been hijacked, officials said Friday.
The captain of the ship was taken hostage, Ercan Topaca, governor of Turkey's northwestern province of Kocaeli was quoted as saying by the semi-official Anatolia news agency, reported Xinhua.
"It is not yet clear if the ship was hijacked by one single individual. There is one person that has taken the captain of the ship as hostage. Security forces began working to save the ship. There are 20 passengers on the ship, including the crew members," Topaca said.
Three security boats are following the hijacked "Kartepe" passenger ferry, which was travelling in the Gulf of Izmit, east of Turkey's largest city of Istanbul.
